Currently, admission to UM Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba is based on a combination of applicants’ scores on the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) and their Academic Grade Point Average (AGPA). Students contemplating applying for law may wish to learn about current statistical trends related to these admissions requirements at Robson Hall. Below are tools regarding AGPA calculation, the formula used by the admissions committee, the Grading Scale, and the latest LSAT/AGPA statistics table.
An applicant’s overall academic record is reviewed regardless if the courses were taken on a full or part-time basis, in undergraduate or graduate programs, or in Regular, Evening, or Summer session. Once 90 credit hours have been earned, we begin dropping the lowest grades from the calculation.
If an applicant has completed:
- 90-101 credit hours, 18 of the lowest credit hours (6 half courses or 3 full courses or a combination of) are dropped;
- 102-113 credit hours, 24 of the lowest credit hours (8 half courses, or 4 full courses or a combination of) are dropped;
- 114+ credit hours, 30 of the lowest credit hours (10 half courses or 5 full courses, or a combination of).
Note: A one term course is 3 credit hours and a two term course is 6 credit hours.
Deadline for Course Completion by Category:
Index Score Category: December 31 in the year of application
Individual Consideration Category: September 1 in the year of application
Canadian Indigenous Category: December 31 in the year of application
The selection of applicants in the Index Score category is based upon the applicant’s academic record (50%) and the applicant’s LSAT (50%).
If a student has a AGPA of 3.70 and an LSAT of 160, the Index Score would be 74.444. The Index Score is used to rank applicants. The effect of the formula is to weigh the AGPA and the LSAT equally. The highest possible Index Score is 100. No other criteria are used in evaluation. Identical Index Scores are ranked according to AGPA.
The grading scale at the University of Manitoba is 4.50. Percentages are converted to letter grades, and when both the percentage and the letter grade appear on a transcript, the percentage is used:
| A+ | is a 4.5 and is equivalent to 90 – 100% |
| A | is a 4.0 and is equivalent to 80 – 89% |
| B+ | is a 3.5 and is equivalent to 75 – 79% |
| B | is a 3.0 and is equivalent to 70 – 74% |
| C+ | is a 2.5 and is equivalent to 65 – 69% |
| C | is a 2.0 and is equivalent to 60 – 64% |
| D | is a 1.0 and is equivalent to 50 – 59% |
| F | is a 0.0 and is equivalent to less than 50% |
Grades of ‘A-‘ and ‘B-‘ are assigned the value of ‘A’ and ‘B’ respectively.
