Introduction to Israeli law and society: ancient peoples and newcomers in the Start-up Nation
May 6th- May 24th, Jerusalem, Israel
This three week program is an academic partnership between U of M law school and Hebrew University in Jerusalem. This course is open to all law students, there are no prerequisites and it qualifies for 4 credit hours towards your J.D. program. This course is made possible through the subsidy of the Government of Manitoba and Friends of Hebrew University. What is the focus of the program?
Students will learn how Israel adapts its legal system to its social and economic challenges and then compare and contrast that with the Canadian experience. anada and in other ways very different. Just about every issue that affects Canada - building a modern high tech economy, integrating newcomers and members of traditional societies, and promoting human rights in the face of various internal and external pressures - applies to Israel.
Specific areas of study will include: Israel as the start up nation; the rise of Israel as a world leader in high tech innovation; the challenges of integrating traditional societies such as ultra-orthodox Jews, immigrants from Ethiopa, non-Jewish immigrants from places like Eritrea and Darfur and various Arab minority group into the mainstream economy. Many areas of academic interest are covered by aspects of the program including: constitutional law, family law, business law, immigrant and refugee law, human rights law, aboriginal law, criminal law and international trade law.
