Admissions

Deadlines

Admission to the LL.M. Program occurs on a rolling basis, beginning in November of the year preceding study. To be considered for financial awards (Fellowships) applicants are advised to apply early.

However, the final deadline to apply for admission is March 15 of the year for which admission is sought.

Requirements

Admission to the program requires at least a B average (3.0 CGPA) in the last two previous years of full time university study (60 credit hours) and possession of a common law or civil law degree (or equivalent). Applicants whose primary language* is not English must demonstrate a minimum TOEFL score of 600 (written), 250 (computer-based) or 100 (IBt-based). The minimum IELTS score of 7.0 on the Academic model with no less than 7.0 on each section will also be accepted.

To qualify for an English proficiency test waiver one of the following must be applicable:

1. Applicants holding secondary school diplomas and/or university degree(s) found at the Faculty of Graduate Studies site

2. Lived in Canada (or in country where the official language is English) consecutively for ten years.

All applicants must be admitted by the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Graduate Students.

*
The term primary language is defined as that language which is most commonly used in homes, communities and daily commerce in your native country.

Application Process

Applicants must:

1. Complete the Application Form provided by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and submit all supporting documentation:

     http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/graduate_studies/admissions/index.html

2. Provide a research proposal defining the area of legal study to be pursued (approximately 1-3 pages).  This should include what your proposed thesis topic is and what your research question(s) will be.  You may also indicate a preferred supervisor and how you heard about Robson Hall Faculty of Law's LL.M. program.  Please note:  this is not a statement of interest in law nor your personal history.  This is your research proposal.

3. Submit a recent curriculum vitae or resume.

4. Submit an additional recommendation letter (in addition to the two required by the Faculty of Graduate Studies).

Applicants are strongly advised to provide additional materials demonstrating research potential (i.e. copies of publications and other written works).

***All application materials must be sent directly to the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Manitoba, 500 E. University Centre, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, R3T 2N2.

Given the competitive quality of the LL.M. program, satisfaction of the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to the program, and completion of an LL.M. does not entitle the degree-holder to practice law in Canada.
